Sensory Integration: Neuronal Filters for Polarized Light Patterns

چکیده

Animal and human behaviour relies on local sensory signals that are often ambiguous. A new study shows how tuning neuronal responses to celestial cues helps locust navigation, demonstrating a common principle of sensory information processing: the use of matched filters.

Conditional perception under stimulus ambiguity: polarization- and azimuth-sensitive neurons in the locust brain are inhibited by low degrees of polarization.

Sensory perception often relies on the integration and matching of multisensory inputs. In the brain of desert locusts, identified neurons that signal the sun's direction relative to the animal's head integrate information about the polarization pattern of the sky with information on the color and intensity contrast of the sky. The cloudless blue sky exhibits a gradient from unpolarized sunligh...

Critical Changes in Cortical Neuronal Interactions in Anesthetized and Awake Rats.

BACKGROUND Neuronal interactions are fundamental for information processing, cognition, and consciousness. Anesthetics reduce spontaneous cortical activity; however, neuronal reactivity to sensory stimuli is often preserved or augmented. How sensory stimulus-related neuronal interactions change under anesthesia has not been elucidated. In this study, the authors investigated the visual stimulus...

Objective Sensory processing refers to reception, adjustment, and integration of sensory information sequentially and generates adaptive responses. People need to have appropriate sensory processing abilities for functioning adequately in the environment and be able to participate in activities of daily living. Dunn's sensory processing model consists of two constructions. The first constructio...

Light habitats and the role of polarized iridescence in the sensory ecology of neotropical nymphalid butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae).

The exploitation of polarized light may increase perceived visual contrast independent of spectrum and intensity and thus have adaptive value in forest habitats, where illumination varies greatly in brightness and spectral properties. Here we investigate the extent to which Costa Rican butterflies of the family Nymphalidae exhibit polarized wing reflectance and evaluate the types of habitats in...

Modulation of calcium-dependent postsynaptic depression contributes to an adaptive sensory filter.

Modulation of calcium-dependent postsynaptic depression contributes to an adaptive sensory filter. J. Neurophysiol. 80: 3352-3355, 1998. The ability of organisms to ignore unimportant patterns of sensory input may be as critical as the ability to attend to those that are behaviorally relevant. Mechanisms used to reject irrelevant inputs range from peripheral filters, which allow only restricted...
